Staff News Updates from Staff Council President
October 27, 2021 - Scott Sanchez
Happy Wednesday everyone,
I wanted to alert you to some exciting staff hiring news and invite you to participate in some of the great events taking place on campus over the next couple of weeks.
Staff Hiring News
I want to congratulate Chief Joe Silva and Interim-Chief Government Relations Officer, Nathan Bush. As President Stokes highlighted in the President’s Weekly Perspective on Monday, effective November 1, both of these
gentlemen will step into their new roles. Chief Silva will be shedding the interim tag after 16 months and a nationwide search to replace former-Chief Kevin McCabe. As the son of two former-UNMPD officers, I know how important it is to have a strong leader at UNMPD and I think most would agree that the University made the right call in hiring a proven leader who has the support of their officers. For Government Relations, we were lucky to have Dr. Barbara Damron leading our efforts over the last few years, and although we will miss her, we are excited that she will still be around – pursuing her scholarly work in the College of Pharmacy. She leaves behind a team of dedicated and highly competent individuals who will be led by Nathan Bush who until now has been serving as Assoc Director for Government Relations focused on leading our efforts to interact with our legislators at every level of government. We are excited to see Mr. Bush step into the role of Interim-Chief Government Relations Officer and get us through the next several months, including a surely action-packed 30-day NM State legislative session in January 2022.
Staff-As Students
Next Monday (November 1st) from 11:30 am–1:00 pm the UNM Staff Council’s Staff Success Committee will be hosting their bi-annual Staff as Students event. I know I am looking forward to registering early for the Spring Semester, and for those of you who are also working on pursuing your degree, remember that UNM Staff are eligible for Priority Registration and Fee Waiver. Even if you aren’t yet registered or admitted, take this opportunity to come to the SUB Ballroom A & B. We will have representatives from the Office of Admissions, Bursar and Registrar, Continuing Education, Office of Graduate Studies, Employee and Organizational Development (EOD) and more. You can also enter for a chance to win one of three $25 Lobo Cash gift cards by visiting at least four different department booths. For questions, please contact Nate Faust-Shucker | nfaustshucker@unm.edu
CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS COMMUNICATIONS: Staff that cannot attend Staff As Students in person should send an email to Dept_Update-L@list.unm.edu. The request must be sent from the individual’s @unm.edu email account, must identify the requestor as a UNM employee, and should include the requestor's UNM ID.
Monday, November 1st, 2021 (2:00 pm)
President Stokes and Dr. Younggren will be hosting the entire campus community for their annual homecoming s’mores roast at University House from 2 to 4 p.m. She has asked that we join her, along with Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy, for a cup of cocoa or cider, some games, and a chance to win prizes. There will be live entertainment by the UNM dance team, concert choir, and Something Major A Cappella group.
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021 (5:00-8:00 pm)
Join the UNM Alumni Association and your fellow Staff Alumni for Happy Hour at Hodgin! Homecoming is a time to come together, network, connect, and have a little fun. This event is for alums of all ages to get to know each other and the unique association chapters that support our Lobo grads. Some of the groups include our Albuquerque Chapter, Young Alumni Chapter, and many other cultural, interest, department, and school-based groups. Enjoy spirited beverages and tasty tápas while reminiscing with fellow grads. This is also a great opportunity to tour historic Hodgin Hall. The event is free, and attendees will be entered into drawings for epic Lobo gear prizes. The first 100 guests will receive a special Homecoming giveaway, bring your friends! The event gets underway at 5:00 p.m. with the last call at 8:00 p.m. Come say hello! I will be there, and I hope many of you will join as well.
Saturday, November 6th, 2021 (2:00pm-4:30pm)
Join the UNM Alumni Association, Alumni Letterman’s Association, and the rest of the Lobo family as we tailgate at University Stadium ahead of the Lobos 5:00 pm kickoff against the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. There will be drawings for spirit gear, live music from JAGG, a special free Homecoming megaphone (pictured below), and popcorn given by the UNM Parent Association. Make sure to RSVP so they can get an accurate headcount.
Thanks for reading and I’ll hopefully see you all soon.
