Upcoming Staff Council Precinct Elections!

Hello, Staff! On February 17, eligible staff will receive their 2022 UNM Staff Council Self Nomination Form. We encourage you to nominate yourself for a seat on the Staff Council representing your precinct. Participation in Council offers opportunities to improve UNM staff’s overall work experiences while meeting others across campus interested in making positive impact, as well.

Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Any regular, full-time or part-time staff employee, who has completed six months of service at the University by March 25, 2022 is eligible to serve on the Staff Council.
  • Self-nomination period runs from February 17 – through March 7, 2022, 5 p.m. No late nominations will be considered.
  • The self-nomination forms are linked to individual NetIDs and will notwork when forwarded.
  • Voting will take place March 21 - 25, 2022.

Do you have ideas that could benefit staff and wonder how you can get involved to move them forward?  Do you enjoy working with others to help people in need and bring fun into their workdays? If so, please consider running.

What is Staff Council?
Staff Council consists of 60 representatives; 30 represent pay grades and 30 represent precincts, or groups of organizational codes. Councilors serve as a voice for staff to the UNM Regents and Administration, representing the interests of staff in their grade or precinct. Recently, the Council won parental leave for staff, helped staff support UNM Legislative priorities by providing easy-to-use postcards, and held on-line events for staff to register for classes early.

How much time will this take?

At a minimum, Councilors are expected to attend the two-hour monthly business meeting, currently held on the third Tuesday of the month online. During these meetings Councilors and guest presenters share information; Councilors can discuss issues and propose actions for vote by the full Council.

Much of the Council's work (and fun) gets accomplished through its committees. For example, they help staff enroll in UNM courses, host staff appreciation events, oversee award programs, and write resolutions to be approved by the Council for forwarding to UNM Administration. Councilors will meet approximately one additional hour a month per committee.

UNM Policy 1150 gives guidelines for release time based on the employee’s level of involvement.

What do I do?

In addition to attending Council and committee meetings, you’ll keep your constituents informed and receive their feedback using the listserv you’re provided. You’ll interact with a broad community of staff with the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships and become part of a deep resource pool. You can join or propose a new committee to work on specific topics and projects of interest to you. Essentially, you’ll become integral in increasing the voice and visibility of UNM Staff.

We hope you’ll consider running for Staff Council! Good luck!
